Nicky Whittenham

Public Arts Consultant and Director
Nicky comes from the Dorset coast. During her architectural degree studies, Nicky became interested in the role of communities in shaping the appearance of their local environments. This led Nicky to working for a decade as a Community Development Manager – within a housing regeneration setting in Plymouth and Cornwall – until she gained her Master’s degree ‘Art In Architecture’.
Since then, Nicky has enjoyed a fifteen-year career, guiding many public and private sector clients and local authorities in the creative commissioning of experienced artists to produce beautiful, high-quality and contemporary public artworks and design schemes for public spaces, which contemporise the local heritage. The c.40 commissions Nicky has delivered, can be found across the south west of England.
Central to Nicky’s commissioning approach – and recognisable at the heart of all her work – is the silver thread of local community involvement. Through collaborating with groups and individuals – local to a site and with an interest in it – Nicky invites the community to express its hopes, aspirations and dreams in relation to their locality and to carefully align this with the potential for transforming a ‘place’.
Nicky is pleased to serve as a Director of The Gugg and looks forward to connecting and collaborating with the people of Stalbridge and surrounding area to pique local people’s interest and kick off conversations. It is hoped these conversations can lead to the formation of bespoke, community projects offered by The Gugg, which engage the community and nurture well-being and cohesion, thereby further enhancing the venues attraction in the locality.
